SNAP to build $28M battery storage project

SN AboitizPower (SNAP), a joint venture of Norwegian firm SN Power and Aboitiz Group’s unit AboitizPower, has set its sights on the construction of a 20-megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS) worth USD28 million or nearly PHP1.5 billion.

In a statement Friday, SNAP said the BESS facility will be constructed in its Magat Hydro Electric Power Plant by 2020 to boost its ancillary services and standby power supply.

“You can think of battery energy storage as a giant power bank,” said SNAP Group President and Chief Executive Officer Joseph Yu.

“With BESS, we will have a battery facility that is connected to the grid where we can withdraw power from when necessary,” added Yu.

SNAP will start the feasibility study for BESS in Magat by 2019.

The construction of the project is expected to commence in 2020, with operation to start by 2022 once the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines approves the Ancillary Services Procurement Agreement. (PNA)
