Ranking officials of the Development Bank of the Philippines handed over checks worth P3 million each to the provinces of Davao del Sur and North Cotabato as the government bank’s financial assistance for the relief and rehabilitation of areas damaged by a succession of strong earthquakes late last year.
Gov. Douglas Ra. Cagas accepted the check for Davao del Sur and gave the same right away to the provincial treasurer who accompanied him together with other provincial officials. Reporting on the thousands of people adversely affected by the earthquakes, Cagas thanked DBP officials headed by no less than President Emmanuel Herbosa who was accompanied by members of the DBP board and ranking officers for the humanitarian gesture.
The magnitude 6-plus quakes adversely affected Digos City, Bansalan, Magsaysay, Padada and Kiblawan in Davao del Sur.
North Cotabato provincial board member Onofre Respicio, on the other hand, received the other P3-million DBP check in behalf of North Cotabato Gov. Nancy Catamco. The town of Makilala and Kidapawan City in North Cotabato suffered widespread damage due to the quakes and were now in various stages of rehabilitation, according to Board Member Respicio, who read the message of thanks of Governor Catamco.
Cagas directed the provincial treasurer and other concerned provincial officials to deposit their disaster funds and other bank accounts in a reciprocal gesture to DBP.
The turnover of the checks was witnessed by Secretary Emmanuel Pinol of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) who earlier facilitated the DBP officers’ presentation of the bank’s lending programs, and high-yielding products.
Pinol said that the DBP will finance several MinDA-inspired development projects designed to liberate a dozen of municipalities in Mindanao from poverty.
