The start of the eight-day period to file Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for the 2025 midterm elections in Davao City on Tuesday was generally peaceful, orderly and quiet as only two aspirants have submitted their bid for local positions.

Fifty-four-year-old Ramil Fernando Brucal, who is seeking for a city council seat in the city’s third district, was the first aspirant to file a COC.

Brucal, a professor at the Davao Central College in Toril, Davao City, filed his CoC around 8:27 a.m. at the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) district office inside Magsaysay Park.

“I think it is not only in the four corners of the classroom that I can give my services. I need to go outside of the box,” the professor at the Davao Central College told the media.

Brucal is advocating for scholarship and education for the youth, sports, and ecological solid waste management.

Just before the 5 p.m. deadline, Markoper Javier of Catalunan Pequeño filed his COC for city councilor of the first district.

Meanwhile, the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) reported that as of 5 p.m. of October 1, 2024, still no aspirants filed for the House seats for the three districts of Davao City as well as for vice mayor and for city councilor of the city’s second district.

The first day of COC filing in Davao City has concluded without a candidate filing for the mayoralty position, which is expected to be a head to head contest between a Duterte and a Nograles.

In Mati City, Davao Oriental, Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat filed her COC, seeking her third and final term in office. She is running alongside her nephew, incumbent Vice Mayor Enzo Rabat.

Other aspirants in Mati City who filed their COCs were Captain Daniel Macaubos and former Brgy. Captain Edgar Valera for councilors.

In Leyte, House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez filed his COC as a re-electionist in the first district of Leyte.

In the national scene, Ani Party-list Rep. Wilbert Lee was the first candidate to file a COC for the Senate. Incumbent Senator and former Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP) member Francis Tolentino also filed his COC as re-electionist.
