Money and You – Know what you want

by Jet Villamor

The bigger trouble is not on how to achieve our goals in life, it is actually on knowing what we actually truly desire. We should therefore start from knowing what we really want in life, for when it is clearly set – achieving it will take care of itself.
In my many encounters with so many people with diverse backgrounds and upbringing, in the countless training sessions I have conducted, I have come to realize that only a  few know exactly what they want in life. Majority are just simply coasting along waiting for what life will bring and what life may offer them. The worst part is, since they do not really know and don’t bother to discover what they really want in life – the focus is on the things that they don’t like rather than on the things that they like.
The problem with this kind of mentality is, whatever your mind is focused on, whatever you spend your energy on – it will be given you. A very simple classic example that I  always use is that of a person who has a loan or is in debt to someone or to an institution. I will bet my dinner tonight, that his thought processes are really focused on the amount of debt he owes and how he will be able to repay it. And so you will ask me, “What’s wrong with that?” The person’s focus is on the problem. Why? Because he is very much focused on the thing that he dislikes most, the “debt”. When you continue focusing on your debt, the probability is very high that you will end up with more debt than being able to repay it. If we are too focused on the problem we will end up with more problems. The secret to a better and happy life is to focus on the things that we like, exert more energy on the solution rather than on the problem. On the example I have just presented, why not simply shift the focus from, “how am I going to pay-off my debt?” – to “How am I going to make more money?” Because, if the focus is on making more money, the end result is paying off those debts.
