EDUCATING people on the basics of the stock market and how it works has always been in the minds of top Philippine Stock Exchange executives like Leo Quinito, who takes care of PSE’s capital markets development — and he makes sure their “education seminars” are full-packed without incurring expenses with the help of sponsors (mostly PSE listed firms) who pick up the bills by promoting the sale of their stock to participants.
That’s why their free stock market seminar held here in August last year at the Royal Mandaya Hotel was jam-packed with clients of Davao stock brokerage firms eager to learn more about how to make money in the stock market and avoid losses that burn big holes in their pockets
Of course, PSE should be thankful there’s a Davao Stock Traders Association here and even a Davao-based blog called Pinoy Stock Trader that’s doing some of the “education” work for them without any help from them and doing it without any sponsors.
Due to the demand, it’s beginning to be a monthly affair for PST which is set to hold its next “Stock Trading Forum” on June 26 Sunday at the mezzanine floor of My Hotel (1:30pm to 5pm) as posted on their latest blog post. This happens to be their sixth forum on stock trading for beginners and investors since they started this seminar series in mid-October last year.
PSE’s approach during its last basic “stock market seminar” at the Apo View Hotel last November was treating Dabawenyos as “kindergarten” kids who don’t know a thing about the stock market — until a young woman stood up and told the PSE execs that she made five million pesos in 12 months just trading stocks at home from her laptop.
That happens to be the goal of the Davao “stock trading forum” on June 26 , according to PST organizers, which is to teach participants how to find the right stock, how to buy at the right time, how and when to sell and take profits, how to cut losses, — and other practical topics needed by an investor or trader in making money from stocks.
It wasn’t surprising for PST organizers to get inquiries from all over the country — Manila, Laguna, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, etc — asking when the stock trading seminar series will be made available to them. The PST blog is apparently making its presence felt nationwide among Pinoy internet surfers desperate to learn more about stock investing or trading.
Too bad, there’s no plan yet for PST to reach them — unless there’s a sponsor who’ll take care of all expenses. Perhaps, the country’s stock exchange might take the cudgels and do this series for a change?
