EDITORIAL – The Indispensables

President Aquino just said “nobody is indispensable in government” as he winds up his presidency officially on June 30. On Monday, the country will select his successor.
Giving weight to Aquino’s pronouncement that no one is indispensable in government, we are reminded of how many times some of his trusted men screwed up at work and yet they remain in office.
How about those not close to him?
The relief of Chief Supt. Ronald dela Rosa yet affirms the penchant of the Aquino administration for selective justice.
Dela Rosa, ‘Bato’ to many Dabawenyos for his strong stand against criminalities, was relieved the other day from his assignment as brigade commander of Reactionary Standby Support Force(RSSF) for the May 9 elections.
Dela Rosa was sacked just as quickly as his post on Facebook went viral. There were other posts on social media made by Dela Rosa which were said to have convinced the PNP hierarchy that he is involved in partisan politics. One post was Dela Rosa’s paying tribute to Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and greeting him on his birthday.
The swift sacking of Dela Rosa is in contrast to the case of four police generals who attended a Liberal Party meeting in Quezon City last month. Instead of getting the whip, the four were ‘defended’ by the PNP superiors and got away unscathed.
The patent selective justice by this administration has saved sacred cows like Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala and MIAA chief Jose Angel Honrado for being their close allies.
There seems to be a protected list in this administration while the rest are dispensables.
So where is the weight of President Aquino saying no one is indispensable?
Sometimes, words thrown in the air are weightless.
