Pag-asa, the first captive bred Philippine Eagle in the world turned 27 on January 15, 2019. 38 junior and senior high students from Baguio National School of Arts and Trade, Lighthouse Homeschool Network, Philippine Science High School Southern Mindanao Campus and the University of South Eastern Philippines participated in the hatchday celebration.
The PEF held a series of talks and workshops at the Philippine Eagle Center with Dr. Jayson Ibanez, PEF Director for Research and Conservation, Mr. Domingo Tadena, PEF Consultant for Conservation Breeding and Engr. Lorna Maxino, DCWD Watershed Management Chief as resource speakers. They talked about the opportunities, challenges and the huge impact of conservation efforts have on wildlife and on the environment.
PEF Biologists, Animal Keepers, and Foresters conducted workshops on telemetry, reforestation. Through these activities, the PEF aims to stir up interest on wildlife conservation in the city.
“We could lose these eagles in our lifetime. Hopefully, with your help that won’t happen. Study hard and you’ll become leaders in your own right that would be able to influence policies and influence actions of people around you, so that you can work to protect our environment and the eagles. Not only for your sake, but for your future children as well.” said PEF Executive Director Dennis Salvador to the participants.
