Braga asks for deferment of RFID implementation

While the city council did not categorically say it is against the implementation of the Radio Frequency Identification project of the Land Transportation Office, it wants to postpone its implementation until stakeholders are satisfied with its provisions.
“While I am not against the RFID in general, this is a huge money-making project of the LTO and the Department of Transportation and Communication which should be deferred,” councilor Pilar Braga said.  In effect, Braga has passed a resolution requesting the LTO and the DOTC to defer the implementation of RFID.
RFID is much like the barcode used by groceries to check on the amount and details of the items being purchased. Braga said, the RFID makes use of a tag with a monochip on it with a unique number assigned to every tag, and in effect to every vehicle.
“We are asking the lead agencies to defer the implementation of the RFID for proper information, consultation and proper acceptability among the people who will be affected by the RFID,” she said.
While the LTO claims that RIFD will make the process of vehicle registration faster and more efficient, she said, it has its disadvantages which need further discussion and classification.
“Even presidential consultant on transport matters, Secretary Ariel Lim, is not too keen about the RFID implementation which is set for January 1, 2010,” Braga said.
She added that the project is being enforced on motorists who claim that this is another burden for them as they will be required to pay a one-time payment of P350 for the RFID.
