Kids-friendly electrical safety tips from Davao Light

Children are curious by nature. They will always explore and touch anything around them. When at home, one of the many that interests them are electric appliances. If they are left alone with these gadgets being used, children may pull on its cord, topple the appliance or stick objects into its electrical outlet.
Hence, it is important the we teach our kids electrical safety rules so they can protect themselves and others from the dangers of electricity.
Davao Light and Power Company gathers these simple safety tips which you and your child can practice at home.
Hide exposed cords and wiring, and always throw away or repair frayed wiring. If your children are old enough, involve them in conducting a safety check for uncovered wall outlets, loose cords and frayed wires.
Kids today are very much involved in electronic gadgets which require access to electricity. Teach them to avoid plugging too many electronic devices into one power source. Create a “three strikes, you’re out” rule, wherein, if more than three electronic devices are plugged into one outlet, the plugs of any additional devices must be plugged into a different source.
Power outages can frighten children. Make a household safety plan in case of an outage. Have your child help you find (but not touch) devices that require unplugging, such as televisions, computers and refrigerators.
Even when outdoor, teach your child what to do if he comes upon a downed power line or pole. Tell them to back away from any downed power line he sees and to go tell an adult immediately. Even if not sparking, downed power lines can still conduct electricity.
Electricity is something that children should not be afraid of but be knowledgeable about. Parents should involve children in electrical safety activities at home so that they will know the danger that it might bring them if used improperly. This will not only help you prevent electrical fires but above all will ensure that your kids are safe.
