THE Philippine military gave an early Christmas gift Saturday to residents of Barangay Calabcab in Maco town, Compostela Valley, who were traumatized by an encounter three weeks ago between government forces and communist rebels.
Lt. Col. Jerry Borja, commander of the 71st Infantry Battalion, said they conducted a stress debriefing and medcap and dental mission in collaboration with the Kiwanis Club of Tagum, Therma Marine Incorporation of the Aboitiz Group of Companies and the local government of Maco.
“We conducted a series of activities to assess the adverse effects of the attack by the NPA on the barangay and to help the residents, especially children, to cope with the negative effects of traumatic incident they have experienced,” Borja said, adding that pre-Christmas presents to include toys and slippers were given to 101 kids in the community.
“They had also a free Jollibee meal during for lunch,” he said, adding that 191 residents benefited from free medical and dental services as well as medical check-up and medicines.
Meanwhile, restoration work on the damaged Barangay Hall, Health Center and Day Care Center in Brgy. Calabcab began weeks after the attack by about 60 members of the New People’s Army on October 18 that wounded six soldiers and two civilians. Two rebels were killed.
