About 300 employees of Davao Light & Power Co.took time out of their assignments to undertake Brigada Eskwela activities at Matina Aplaya Elementary School in Barangay Matina Aplaya, Davao City, and at Tuganay Elementary School in Carmen, Davao del Norte last Saturday, May 25.
The employees of the Aboitiz-owned electric utility were led by no less than Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Art M. Milan, and Vice-President for Engineering Rodger Velasco (at Matina Aplaya Elementary School) and Asst. Vice President and Panabo Branch Manager Engr. Reynold Felix (at Tuganay Elementary). Joining them were Assistant Vice Presidents, Department Managers, Supervisors down to the last ranks. There were also some 20 other community stakeholders who provided support to the power utility employees.
The company’s Human Resource and Community Relations Departments, the units that were spearheading the Brigada participation, said the employees were divided by area. Some 220 did Brigada work at Matina Aplaya Elem. School while some 60 employees did theirs at the school in Tuganay.
Both teams did minor repairs and repainting of outer walls and ceilings of seven (7) school buildings consisting of 25 classrooms. Another team repainted the roof and exterior walls of two school buildings (one at Matina Aplaya Elem. School, and one at Tuganay) with seven classrooms; one team also repainted the flag pole rotonda; still another repainted the fence, the planters’ boxes and orchidarium grills.
Other than the volunteer work made by the employees, Davao Light also provided all the tools and materials used in the repainting and repairs of classrooms.
A team of skilled workers was hired to provide proper instructions to the employee volunteers and undertook the finishing work.
Participating in the annual Brigada Eskwela is an annual Aboitiz Group commitment to support the efforts of the Department of Education to provide public school children a better learning environment when they go back to classes at the start of the school year.
For Davao Light, a leading member of the Group under the Aboitiz Power Corp., joining the Brigada Eskwela is the company’s way of “giving back to the community” in recognition to the latter’s patronage and support to the electric utility’s operation.
