Tagum Coop serves lugaw to 1,000 Caravan people

Almost 1,000 individuals, mostly indigenous peoples (IPs),had their fill of hot congee (lugawi) served by Tagum Cooperative during the 16th leg of the ARENA Serbisyo Caravan which made a stopover on June 19, 2015 in Sitio JBL, Barangay Sto. Niño in Talaingod, Davao del Norte.
The Tagum Cooperative free congee offering was done in coordination with the ARENA Serbisyo Caravan which gathered more than 3,000 IPs of the Ata-Manobo tribe coming from various sitios of Talaingod.
Women, children, men, and elderly beneficiaries of the Caravan made their way to Tagum Cooperative booth for congee which was served at mid-morning and at lunchtime. Staff members of the various national agencies deployed to serve during the eventalso benefitted from the hot congee.
Organized by members of the Association of Regional Executives of National Agencies (ARENA) in Region 11, the Serbisyo Caravan pooled together assistance and services of various national line agencies. It also welcomed contributions from civic and non-government organizations (NGOs).
Tagum Cooperative was among the civic and NGO groups that took part in the Talaingod leg of the Serbisyo Caravan. Among those present were Secretary Dinky Soliman of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD); Undersecretary Manny Bautista, executive director of Cabinet Cluster on Security, Justice and Peace; Assistant Secretary Jean Ubial of the Department of Health (DOH); and national officials of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP).
In a statement, Tagum Cooperative Chairperson Norma R. Pereyras, who was on official business in Cagayan de Oro City at the time,said Tagum Coop’s participation with the ARENA Serbisyo Caravan in Talaingod was in line with the 7th Cooperative Principle: “Concern for Community.”
“It is also our way of giving life to what Pope Francis said that we should ‘take the road less travelled and that we should go the peripheries to serve,’” she said.
Pereyras said Tagum Coop’s congee serving,especially for the IPs,was “fulfilling,” quoting the words of Jesus Christ who said, “Whatever you do for the least of the brethren, you do it unto me.” (Tagum Cooperative)
