Health researches
In a national confab held last week in Davao City, health researchers across the country are batting for additional funding through the proposed health research bill which will institutionalize and provide additional budgetary allocation to the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS).
Health Research is a generation of new knowledge with the goal of identifying and dealing with health problems, health systems and policies which will have an impact on public health. In Region 11, the health research system is redirecting its focus on reducing child and maternal mortality, which is high, particularly in Mindanao, in line with the Millennium Development Goals.
Discovery retold
The history of Diwalwal gold mining was unveiled Wednesday at the Museo Dabawenyo. The provincial government of Compostela Valley and the Department of Tourism (DOT) 11 in cooperation with the Davao Region Tourism Council and Museo Dabawenyo brought to the discussion the history gold mining and how it has become a “microcosm of wealth of Mindanao.”
During the lecture-forum, Mandaya Datu Camilo Banad said he first discovered in September 23, 1983 gold nuggets at the Naboc River whose waters flowed from streams originating from the mountains of Mt. Diwalwal.
Exemplary
Public prosecutors from Region 11 were cited for their exemplary performance in the prosecution of drug cases.
Undersecretary Clarence Paul Oaminal, vice chairman of the Dangerous Drugs Board, commended their excellent work and disclosed that Region 11 was rated number one nationwide, based in the percentage of conviction of drug cases, with 64.5%, or 149 convictions out of 231 drug cases resolved. Second in rank is Region VII with 61% or 554 convictions out of 1,093 drug cases resolved.
Absentee voting
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) has welcomed the media absentee voting bill filed by Makati Representative Teodoro Locsin Jr.
The group said the proposal of Locsin, chair of the House committee on suffrage and electoral reforms and himself a respected media practitioner, if enacted, “will correct what we would like to believe, an unwitting oversight in the election law that has deprived generations of journalists and media workers of their right to suffrage.”
Gratitude
MINDANAO Trade Expo 2009 chair Ann Pamintuan expressed gratitude over the strong support shown by the private sector, the local government, and the National Government agencies during its the expo’s opening at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Thursday.
The three-day expo, which ran until August 16, features products that highlight the creativity, ingenuity, and craftsmanship of Mindanao-based micro, small, and medium enterprises. Some of the products showcased were premium export items such as furniture, woven bags, jewelry, and fashion accessories.
