4 Davao City lawyers want to be lawmakers

A bar topnotcher and three other lawyers want to represent Davao City in Congress, particularly in the House of Representatives.
The topnotcher is Mylene Garcia, while the other lawyers are Karlo Nograles, Ruy Elias Lopez and Diosdado Mahipus Sr.
Mylene, who placed third in the 1990 bar examinations, is the daughter of former congressman Manuel “Nonoy” Garcia, also a lawyer, and the older sister of incumbent Congressman Vincent J. Garcia. Both father and son served for three consecutive terms as congressman of the Second District.
Aside from being the only Davao bar topnotcher gunning for a seat in Congress, Mylene is the only lady lawyer in the Davao race.
Mahipus  is the other lawyer in the quest for the right to represent the Second District which include the 11 vote-rich barangays of Agdao, Buhangin, Sasa, Tibungco, Bunawan, and Lasang.
Mahipus is a veteran city councilor, while Ms Garcia has served as chief of staff of her brother, congressman Vincent, and Senator Mar Roxas and has been assistant secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The third lawyer, this time in the First District, is Karlo Nograles, who is only in his 30s. Karlo seeks to assume the seat to be vacated by his father, House Speaker Prospero, now a candidate for city mayor, pitted against Vice Mayor Sara Duterte, who is a lawyer like Speaker Nograles.
The fourth Davao lawyer in the race for Congress is comebacking Ruy Lopez C. Lopez, son of the late Elias Lopez, two-time Davao City mayor and three-term congressman of the Third District.
Ruy Elias is challenging incumbent Congressman Isidro Ungab, an outstanding Mindanao banker and veteran city councilor.
Most members of the House  are lawyers.
