Speaker Prospero C. Nograles has activated congressional committees to help government tackle the energy crisis and fears of a defective poll automation system.
“Our House Committee on Energy should call a meeting and dig into the possible brownouts in the country,” Nograles said in his instructions through House secretary general Marilyn Barua-Yap.
Possible large scale brownouts continue to be a threat as the nation experiences the start of a hot summer. Power is one of the vital and most crucial requirements of industry and agriculture.
“Reports of growing damage to agricultural crops due to the looming dry spell should not catch us gasping in complacency. Productions in the industrial and economic sectors will be greatly jeopardized by power interruptions,” Nograles said.
The energy panel should be able to elicit from the concerned government agencies and leaders of the private sector all possible options to take in the wake of the threatening dry spell.
He also authorized other congressional panels, especially the committees on Oversight and Suffrage to conduct public hearings even during the current recess to address persistent fears of failure of elections in May.
While he admits that there may no longer be enough time to craft and pass legislations on these two critical issues, Nograles said the House can make recommendations to the Palace and the Comelec based on inputs that will be drawn out from these meetings and public hearings.
“We can recommend to the next Congress because many members will be back. Also, the House can exercise oversight functions whether in session or not and see whether certain laws are working or not,” he said.
