Region 11 behind in MDGs

Data from the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) Region XI show Davao region is still eight years behind its target of the Millennium Development Goals.
In a presentation made by NSCB’s Estrella Torilla, she bared that only the National Capital Region, Regions 2, and 4-A are ahead of targets.
Philippines as a whole, as of 2009, is also eight years behind the MDG target.
“The probability of halving poverty between 1999 and 2015 has gone down but remains on a medium status,” Torilla said.
Philippines is one of the signatories of the UN Millennium Declaration of 2000. It has committed to achieve the MDGs along with 189 states. The MDGs is a set of clearly-defined, time-bound, and measurable goals and targets geared toward globalization benefits of the world.
The MDGs is comprised of eight goals with 21 targets and 58 indicators to be monitored from 1990 and to be achieved in 2015.
In Davao region, goals that have high level of implementation are the efforts in eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, reducing under-five mortality rate (per 1,000 live births), infant mortality rate, prevalence associated with malaria, access to improved water source, and access to sanitary toilet.
Low probability of achieving the target includes the goal of ensuring children everywhere to be able to complete a full course of primary schooling. The goal of promoting gender equality and women empowerment also appeared to have a low probability, as per the data from the NSCB.
Achieving universal access to reproductive health by immunizing mothers with tetanus toxoid plus also turned out low in the implementation process.
The probability used by the NSCB is based on the comparison of actual (from baseline to latest data) and required (from baseline to target year) rates of progress. [PIA 11]
