ROYAL CHEF: GenSan’s K-love for Korean Food

Good food always, always give you A good mood. The totality of the food — smell, sight, feel and taste – is more than enough to trigger your happy hormones. This goes for any food. Be it hot or cold, sweet or savoury, a good food can immediately transport you to Cloud 9 in a snap.

For the foodies in General Santos, enjoying plates of Korean dishes need not mean booking for a trip in Korea. With the many delicious gastronomic places in GenSan, any craving is easily satisfied — sans the booking and immigration line. Everyone, say hello to Jeoung Ga Ne Korean Restaurant. Or should I say, Annyeonghaseyo, Jeoung Ga Ne Korean Restaurant.

For two years, Jeong Ga Ne has been making their diners love Korean food every single time. Operating both in General Santos City and Davao City, owner couple Stan Lee and Maribel Neconcillo Lee has been contributing to the delicious appreciation of Korean dishes. And yes, the love for Korean food has been wonderfully received.

Their menu, like that of other Korean restaurants, highlights a smorgasbord of dishes that transports you to the streets of Korea in a bite. Best seller is Jjampong  — well-received by diners who come in groups. Though a bit on the spicy side, a bowl of jjampong is one dish that displays the many flavours of Korea. From the broth to the noodles to seafood bits and pieces, nothing is more Korean than a bowl of this on any given day. This is especially true for peers and students after a day inside the academe.

Also on their menu is Osam-bulgogi (marinated squid and pork belly grilled and cooked with an assortment of vegetables and mushrooms), Dwaejii Bulgogi (Korean spicy pork), Samgyupsal Jeong Sik (pork dish), Bibimbap (Rice meal topped with vegetable, tender beef slices with a generous amount of red pepper paste), Chicken marinated Hawaiian style, Korean Garlic and Fried Chicken, and Tangsuyuk (sweet, spicy, crunchy fried pork pieces coated in sweet and sour sauce cooked with colorful fruits and vegetables).

Of course, a Korean dining experience is not complete without a plentiful of sides (dishes). Their repertoire includes Kimchi (a staple in Korean cuisine and is considered a traditional side dish made from salted and fermented vegetables), savoury anchovies, boiled potatoes and sauteed bean sprouts to name a few.

Their menu also features a selection of Gimbap perfect for an any day munching. Gimbap, for those who do not know, is a fave Korean dish made from cooked rice and other delectable ingredients rolled in dried sheets of seaweed and served in slices. On their menu is Chamchi Kimbap (colorful rounds of tuna kimbab) and Nude kimbap (basically means that the rice is on the outside) that has since been a favorite amongst diners.

Craving for some hot pot dishes to keep you warm? Jeong Gane’s Budae Jjigae or sausage stew is your best bet. A type of jjigae, this particular dish is made with ham, sausage, baked beans and of course, kimchi. This dish is also known as Army stew.

If the traditional Korean dishes does not excite you, then their new addition to their menu will. What’s new at Jeoung Ga Ne Korean Restaurant? They are now serving Native chicken marinated and cooked with distinctive Korean herbs and spices. Now, that’s one dish that speaks more than just cravings!

Jeoung Ga Ne Korean Restaurant is at Roxas Avenue, in front of DSWD building in General Santos City. They also have a branch in Davao City at the Phoenix Commercial Complex, J. P Laurel Avenue.
