For the Chinese world, the evening of October 4 was the second biggest holiday of the year, but even if the Moon Festival is not as widely celebrated in Davao the evening marks a time when Filipinos of Chinese descent gather. Friends, colleagues, and family come together for a fun night and mooncakes.
With its roots in Hong Kong, the Marco Polo Davao held a lavish Moon Festival buffet at its signature Chinese Restaurant, The Lotus Court. The buffet featured Lotus Court’s signature dishes such as Buddha Jumps Over the Fence Soup, Home-made Tofu and Vegetables, Salted Egg Squid, Peking Duck, Crabs, as well as a new make-your-own noodle soup station.
Also taking center stage is, of course, Marco Polo’s Mooncakes which come in red mung bean and lotus seed paste flavors. Made specially for the Philippine cluster of Marco Polo Hotels, the mooncakes come in sets of four and six and are packaged beautifully in boxes that can be reused after all the mooncakes are consumed, a perfect for the start of the autumn season.
My personal favourite is the mooncake with lotus seed paste. The pastry is soft while the paste has the right amount of sweetness accented by the accompanying salted egg, This pairs perfectly with Marco Polo Davao’s house Althaus Gran Matinee green tea.
