Valentine’s Day (or Saint Valentine’s Day) is celebrated annually on February 14. History states that it begun in the 3rd century between an oppressive Roman emperor (Claudius II) and a humble Christian martyr (Valentinus). The emperor ordered all Romans to worship 12 gods but the martyr who is dedicated to the ideals of Christ, not even the threat of death, kept him from practising his beliefs.
Arrested and imprisoned, he penned a note to his daughter, Julia, on the eve of his death. Valentinus urged his daughter to stay close to God. It was signed “From your Valentine”. He died the next day, February 14 270 AD near a gate (later named Porta Valentini).
After his death, it is believed, Julia planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave. To this day, the almond tree remains a symbol of abiding love and friendship.
