“We have always considered the Filipino as our brothers and sisters”, Indonesian Consul General Berlian Napitupulu said during the commemoration of Indonesia’s 73rd Independence Anniversary at the Marco Polo Hotel Davao last Friday, 31 August.
Indonesia is a Southeast Asian nation best known for its beaches and volcanic islands. Considered one of the most diverse nation in the world, Indonesia is believed to have 17,508 islands, 742 ethnic groups and a thousand of languages.
With strong patriotic zeal, Indonesia’s independence, like that of the Philippines, is a result of a long struggle. Although considered the past, the sacrifice endured by Indonesia’s forefathers will forever tell a story that will go down in history. And on its 73rd year, looking back gives an ultimate realisation that exemplifies a future of strength, commitment and passion to surpass the present that is today.
The event was met with a glamorous showcase of Indonesia’s lavishly rich culture and traditions. From customary outfits to delectable gustatory palate fillers and of course, as part of their repertoire for the night, a showcase of some of their beautifully choreographed dances that made everyone tap their feet in unison to the beat.
For Consul General Napitupulu, he expressed, “Indonesia has been steadily growing at around 5% in the last decade, amidst the ongoing global economy uncertainty”. He further added, “Indonesia-Philippines relations is growing from strength to strength.”
It was indeed a celebration and thanksgiving – a correlation of bilateral union that epitomizes an impeccable merger between countries and its people. Present that night were officials and diplomatic envoys from different countries, local government officials of Davao city, guests and friends from the media joined in the festivities.
“You are Davao’s pride”, was how Atty. Zulaika Lopez described Consul General Napitupulu of his countless achievements and the Consulate’s formidable efforts in keeping the union between Indonesia and the Philippines alive.
Atty. Zulaika Lopez, who represented Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte – Carpio, delivered the Mayor’s message. Part of the Mayor’s message expressed her gratitude which stated, “On behalf of the city government of Davao and all Dabawenyos, I would like to extend my warmest greetings to Consul General and the people of the Republic of Indonesia on the 73rd Anniversary of Indonesian independence”.
Mayor Duterte-Carpio further added, “Tonight as you mark the 73rd anniversary of Indonesian independence, may the memory of the brave men and women instrumental to the liberation of the nation inspire you to continue moving forward as one Bangsa Indonesia towards peace, progress and prosperity”. To end, she gave a short but sweet video message for everyone.
“I would like to propose a toast for the continued progress and prosperity of the Indonesia and Philippines relations”, Consul General Napitupulu said.
For more bountiful and productive years of profound relationship between Indonesia and Philippines, cheers! Again, Selamat Hari Ulang Tahun Republik Indonesia!
