Already six years in the running, this year’s Korean Film Festival features historical and classic-themed films as the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines (KCC) brings Korean culture and cinema to key cities in the Philippines.
Launched in Manila last August 29 with the screening of ‘The Pirates’ at SM Megamall. Lee Seok-hoon, the director of the film, graced the event with a Special Director’s Talk. The Davao leg of the Korean Film Festival was launched last September 12 by Lee Jin Cheol, director of the Korean Cultural Center.
“Davao is one of the main stops of the Korean Film Festival for the past siz years,” shared Mr. Lee in his opening remarks “The warm welcome of Davao City and the growing interest and popularity for koean food, dramas, cosmetics, K-pop and films is the reason why KCC always goes back here in Davao City.”
“This growing interest plays a significant role in maintaining the healty relationship between Korea and the Philippines,” he added “This year, the main theme of our film festival is ‘Time Travel.’ The five films that we will show highlight the history and culture of Korea during five different periods in Korea’s history. These films will make you laugh, cry and think of the importance of loving your friends, country and holding your principles in life.”
Attending the opening were Mr. Kim Chan Sam, president of United Korean Community Association and its members, Mr. Park Yong Min of Korea Culture Center, Mr. Ariel Decena representing honorary consul of Korea Mr. Edgar Ang, Department of Tourism Region XI OIC Zuhairah Abas, and Ms. Winniw Bulig of Museo Dabawenyo representing City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
Regular screenings of the Korean Film Festival in Davao City happen on September 15 to 16, from 11AM onwards in Cinema 6 of SM Lanang Premier. Admission is free on a first-come, first served basis.
Films included in the festival are ‘The Pirates,’ ‘Assassination,’ ‘Warriors of the Dawn,’ ‘Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet,’ and ‘Nameless Gangster: Rules of Time.’
The festival will also be mounted in SM City Iloilo on September 22 to 23; and in SM City Cebu from September 29 to 30.
