Hearing through the canvas

After having been invited by Alfred Galvez to join last year’s Art Portal event which was such a fun success, The Morning Light family decided to organize a similar event.
The art exhibit is dubbed as “Paint A Song” as suggested by Jearvy Lañohan—a fellow mother, teacher, writer and artist. Her idea was to combine both visual and musical art by allowing artists of different levels and skill sets to translate their favourite song onto canvas.

The “Paint a Song” open exhibit showcases artworks by seasoned artists and new talents alongside each other.  It was conceived from a need to infuse our community with art and involve the public on a personal level. The project being an open exhibit, the entries did not go through a selection process and all 96 artworks were put on display. “The songs selected by the artists were wide-ranging, from “Gulong ng Palad” by Eva Eugenio, “Singing in The Rain” by Frank Sinatra, and to “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin.

Aside from the English and Tagalog songs, there were some songs in other languages like “Amor de Madre” and “La Vie en Rose and instrumental ones like, “Requiem” and “Sentimentale”. Not surprisingly though, the songs that were selected most were from The Beatles. And we appreciate our watercolorist, Robin Castillo, for meticulously downloading all the featured songs for our opening night. The featured songs also serve as the playlist for the Morning Light Shop and Gallery for the duration of the exhibit, explained Tita Miyen Lim.

This is the second open exhibit hosted by Morning Light and they are planning to host one or two like this a year, so that everyone is given the chance to build artistic confidence and share painting as art to the community. With 96 artists all over Davao responding to the “Paint A Song” exhibit, to date, 16 artworks have been sold and hopefully a few more with still days to go.

Notable Davao artists that responded to the call of the open exhibit were Trixie B. Borbon, Rita Bustamante, Bryan Cabrera, Ega Carreon, Dadai Joaquin, Amanda Echeverria, Alfred Galvez, and Vanessa Ann P. Ong among others.
“We are very excited for the next batch of artists, we can’t wait to exhibit your creativity. This is another way of communicating to your community, and we definitely want to listen to what you have to express,” Miyen warmly exclaimed. She and the rest of the Morning Light family wish to invite everyone to support local artists and visit “Paint A Song” and other art exhibits hosted by the different art groups all around Davao City—let’s help create our very own art city!
