There will be enough FMD-Free pork for the anticipated high demand for the incoming “Ber” months, Department of Agriculture veterinarian, Dannie Apelo assured on Tuesday.
Apelo explained that the due to the increase in commercial hog exporters from the region, the burden to meet local demands falls on back yard growers.
He also said that the agency is also maximizing its efforts in encouraging more and more backyard hog growers to cater to local demand.
One of the agency’s efforts is through the fattening operation, or the dispersal of piglets to validated or capable hog growers for their initial piggery business.
However, Apelo said that DA operatives are still in quarantine checkpoints safeguarding all incoming and outgoing poultry, swine or goat produces as FMD can possibly be transmitted to any cloven-footed animals.
Apelo explained that the due to the increase in commercial hog exporters from the region, the burden to meet local demands falls on back yard growers.
With this, incomes will be augmented and malpractices will be avoided to prevent deadly diseases within piggeries.
Moreover, Edward So, president of the Davao Hog Raiser Association (DHRA), said on Monday at the Kapehan Sa Dabaw at the SM City Annex that being labeled as FMD-free country, opens various opportunities for existing and potential hog growers, most especially in Davao City, to go into the piggery business and fill in the gap.
