5 dead, 2 injured in Marilog Bridge collapse

Five people died and two others sustained injuries when a bridge collapsed in Sitio Kibakak, Brgy. Malamba, Marilog District, Davao City on Monday afternoon.

Based on the report of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), the incident happened at around 4:45 pm when seven workers of Bujos Sun Builders & Supply Corporation were installing the side panel of the bridge when suddenly it collapsed.

A retrieval operation was conducted by the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and Central 911. Recovered during the operation were the bodies of Cris Napao, 44-year-old, a mason from Balusong in Barangay Matina Crossing, Davao City; boom truck operator Jimboy Liga, 28-year-old from Pagan Grande; and foreman/welder Elmer Sayson, 38-year-old from Banaybanay, Davao Oriental; Rolando Bongguyan Abing, a 40-year-old resident of the area; and Jay Bangonan, a 22-year-old mason.

Also retrieved during the operation were two individuals who sustained injuries, 29-year-old Silas Meljay Bero and 38-year-old Jonathan Dispo from Catalunan Grande. They are currently being treated at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).

Meanwhile, Jay-ar Bughaw, 25-year-old welder and resident of Talomo, Calinan, Davao City; Jayson Bero, 28-year-old welder and resident of Monkayo, Davao de Oro; and Dario Dispo, 42-year-old foreman and resident of Catalunan Grande, Davao City survived unscatched.

According to Dario Dispo, one of the foremen of the construction company, the bridge suddenly collapsed and fell down into the river at a height of more or less 60 feet, trapping all seven (7) workers.

Authorities are currently conducting thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
