In a bid to further strengthen maritime security, the Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM), in partnership with the safety and security cluster of Davao, conducted the inter-agency Maritime Capability Exercise (MARCAPEX).
MARCAPEX was held off the waters of Barangay Daliao, Toril on November 23, and was participated in by the city’s security cluster along with other agencies concerned in maritime safety.
Situations involving threats to the maritime area of the city, including scenarios that require combatting illegal activities at sea, were simulated during the exercises .
A Search and Rescue Drill was also conducted to test efficiency of the collaboration of the coast guards and other agencies in swiftly responding to maritime emergencies.
Onboard fire incidents, as well as the mitigation of oil spills and other environmental challenges, were also simulated during the exercise.
Coast Guard Commodore Rejard Marfe, Commander of the CGDSEM, said that the activity intends to enhance coordination of the agencies involved in maritime safety and security that is necessary in real world operations.
“This exercise reflects not just our commitment to maritime security, safety, and environmental protection, but also our dedication to fostering collaboration across agencies,” he said.
“By working together, we pool our resources, expertise, and determination to protect our seas and uphold the safety and security of our region,” Marfe added.
City Councilor Luna Acosta, chairperson of the Peace and Order Committee, also highlighted the importance of maritime forces, security cluster, and inter-agency collaboration in ensuring the safety and security of the region “especially in safeguarding the borders and waters of the city.”
“This exercise allows us to finetune our coordination, communication, and response strategies ensuring that our forces are equipped to act swiftly and effectively when needed,” she said. CIO
