Department of Education 11 (DepEd 11) spokesperson Jenielito “Dodong” Atillo announced on Thursday that the opening of the School Year (SY) 2025-2026 is tentatively slated on June 16, 2025 while classes will end on March 31, 2026.
“Magsugod ang next school year 2025-2026 sa buwan sa June ug matapos pud ta ug March. Tentative opening pa lamang next school year is June 16, 2025 ug tentative closure sa school year is March 31, 2026,” Atillo said over Davao City Disaster Radio (DCDR).
Atillo shared that all the programs of DepEd continue following the transition of leadership from former education secretary Vice President Sara Duterte to Secretary Sonny Angara, particularly the MATATAG curriculum.
Introduced by the vice president, the MATATAG curriculum focuses on developing lifelong learning skills and creating well-rounded individuals. It aims to prioritize 21st-century skills, improve foundational literacy and numeracy skills, foster inclusivity by integrating global citizenship and respect for diversity, promote a future-thinking mindset, and emphasize values formation.
“What is good with the MATATAG curriculum is mas gaan siya if we compare it with the K-12 basic curriculum. Hopefully, once we have the full implementation of the MATATAG curriculum, we’re hoping na hamugaway na gyud ang tanan. Every day is a learning experience and every day is an effort for us to design more wonderful programs for basic education. Normal na siya for a working kind of curriculum ug continuing to ang atong education efforts,” Atillo said.
In the implementation of MATATAG, Atillo explained that from the previous 45 minutes per learning area, it was decided to return it to one hour per learning area.
“Implemented naman ang MATATAG curriculum ug sa pangutana kung naay nabag-o, kato lang aspeto kabahin sa oras nga i-implementa ang MATATAG curriculum, supposed to be 45 minutes to and ang desisyon was ibalik siya sa one hour per learning area. Naminaw sila Angara sa pulso sa mga magtutudlo and nakuha nila was kulang kaayo ang 45 minutes for one subject area like English, Mathematics, Science and others. Gibalik na sa kanhi nga oras,” he said.
Atillo emphasized that the implementation of the MATATAG curriculum is ladderized.
