Implementation of smart parking system awaits result of negotiation between city gov’t and provider

Full implementation of the AI-powered Smart Parking System in Davao City is still awaiting for the result of the negotiation between the city government of Davao and Smart Philippines, according to an official.

The city government of Davao and Smart Philippines have piloted the Smart Parking System on Ilustre Street last year, which aims to help improve the traffic conditions in the downtown area using smart technology and artificial intelligence.

“Nangayo na ug certification ang Public Private Partnership (PPP) depende na sa result sa negotiation between sa Smart Philippines and the city government of Davao,” said Dionisio Abude, head of the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO), during the Davao Peace and Security Press Corps media briefing at the Royal Mandaya Hotel on Wednesday.

Abude said the implementation of the Smart Parking System is good to go as they have already seen the results of Smart Philippines’ Proof of Concept (POC) on Ilustre Street wherein cameras were installed from General Luna Street to Duterte Street to capture every car parked and car owners pay their parking fee at the kiosk set up in the parking slot.

“Effective gyud siya. Bisan wala siya muadto sa kiosk nga gibutang para ana para didto ka mubayad, ma-capture ka kung wala pa ka kabayad kay mu reflect man sa app nga gigunitan sa monitoring team ug mahibal-an nga wala ka kabayad kay pag abot nimo didto sa area unya na capture na pud ka mu prompt sa gadget nga wala ka kabayad sa imong giparkingan,” Abude explained.

Abude said apart from Ilustre Street, other streets in the downtown area where pay parking is being implemented are being eyed to be installed with the Smart Parking System. These streets are Monteverde, Villa Abrille, C.M. Recto, San Pedro, Pelayo, Anda, and Magallanes.

“Ang ginahimo nato karon ang Posadas St.,” Abude said.

The Smart Parking System is part of the Smart Traffic Enforcement (STE), which is being piloted along C.P. Garcia Highway (Diversion Road), that could detect and capture violators of the speed limit, seatbelt law, and anti-distracted driving act.

For the pilot testing last year, Abude said four cameras were installed along C.P. Garcia Highway.

“As of the moment, na install na nila ang upat ka camera ug naa nata’y Traffic Operation Center, katong yellow na container van, na kung maka capture ang camera musulod sa server ang tanan captured na vehicles. Tanan violations ma-capture but ang focus ana is ang speed limit ug seatbelt violators,” he said.

For the timeline of its full implementation, Abude said it will depend on the negotiation between Smart Philippines and the Davao Light and Power Company.

“Ang last communication sa ato sa Smart Philippines is ang ilang negotiation with the Davao Light and Power Company kay dapat mukabit sila kay naa man sila’y optic nga mugamit ug kuryente,” Abude said.
