CHO-ABTC to public Vaxx prevents rabies

The Davao City Health Office (CHO), through its Animal Bite Treatment Center (ABTC), continues to remind the public that rabies is fatal, but it is also a hundred percent preventable through anti-rabies vaccination.

Dabawenyos are encouraged to seek medical help once bitten or scratched by dogs or cats, and observe the biting animal for 14 days.

Resorting to methods like “tandok” or other non-medical alternatives may result in complications.

Once bitten by an animal like cats and dogs, it is advised to wash the bitten area with flowing water and soap for 10 to 15 minutes as first aid. Disinfect the wound with alcohol and Povidone-iodine or Betadine.

“Tanggalin na po natin yung mga misnomer na i-tandok, butngan og mga ahos, kay pag-abot sa amoa very infected na po yung mga wound. Ang proper po natin gawin after makagat is hugasan yung sugat, lagyan ng betadine at alcohol, and then pumunta po kayo sa mga local ABTCs natin (We should stop doing non-medical practices like tandok or putting garlic on the wound as this would only infect the wounds. The right thing to do is to wash the wound, disinfect with betadine and alcohol, and then go to the nearest ABTC),” Dr. Yleona Ysabel Camelotes, ABTC’s District Health Physician, said during the ISpeak Media Forum on Thursday.

The ABTC also continues to provide free consultations and anti-rabies vaccination for humans. Patients only have to pay P300 for the injection fee.

Last year, the ABTC was able to cater to 48,483 patients.

The city has nine ABTCs including their main office located on Magallanes Street, and satellite centers located in Toril, Mintal, Calinan District, Marilog District, Angliongto in Sasa, Tibungco in Bunawan District, Paquibato, and the newly-opened ABTC in Cabantian.

The CHO is also urging pet-owners to have their pets vaccinated regularly for anti-rabies, and not let their pets stray on the streets as rabies prevention begins with responsible pet ownership. CIO
