The local government of Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, has passed an ordinance regulating the use of bamboo materials to help reduce dengue cases.
City Ordinance 1050, authored by Councilor Melchor Maramara and sponsored by Councilor Kathleen Pagaling, was approved on Wednesday as part of the city’s dengue prevention efforts.
“Bamboo exposed to rainfall can collect water, creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” Maramara said.
Under the ordinance, residents and businesses using bamboo for fences, posts, or decorations must drill holes in the material based on standard specifications to prevent water accumulation.
Last year, Malaybalay City recorded nearly 1,000 dengue cases, while Bukidnon province reported around 5,000.
Violators face penalties ranging from PHP500 to PHP2,000, with business establishments risking license cancellation for non-compliance.
Barangay officials are tasked with monitoring and enforcing the ordinance. (PNA)
