2020 barangay, SK polls set May 11 as scheduled

Barring any changes in the law, it’s on as scheduled.

As far as the Commission on Elections is concerned, the 2020 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections will push through on May 11 next year.

NO NO-EL. Commission on Elections 11 (Comelec 11) spokesperson lawyer Krisna Caballero says based on the existing law barangay elections will push through on May 11, 2020. Caballero made the statement during this week’s I-Speak media forum at City Hall in Davao City. Lean Daval Jr

“Tuloy po ang barangay and SK elections based po sa law,” Comelec 11 spokesperson Lawyer Krishna Samantha Caballero bared on Thursday, July 4 during the I-Speak Forum held at the City Hall of Davao City.

Regardless of several bills filed in Congress rescheduling the barangay and SK polls from May 2020 to May 2023, Caballero explained that as long as the bill isn’t passed yet, the poll body will firmly follow the existing law.

“Resolution pa naman po siya. Habang hindi pa po siya batas, yung existing law po talaga ang susundin namin,” she said.

Isabela 6th District Rep. Faustino “Inno” Dy V vowed on Tuesday that he would commit his first year in office to push for the passage of a measure rescheduling barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls from May 2020 to May 2023. He stressed that there is a need for barangay executives to serve full five-year terms to better serve their constituents and to ensure uninterrupted government services.

On Monday, Dy filed House Bill No. 47, “An Act Postponing the May 2020 Barangay and SK Elections,” which moves the synchronized barangay and SK polls scheduled on the second Monday of May 2020 to the second Monday of May 2023.

Despite that, Caballero bared that Comelec 11 has prepared for the 2020 elections after a short break from the mid-term elections last May 13 this year.

Caballero said they still cannot share the complete details of their preparation yet since almost everything is still tentative.

“Madami pang hindi pa finalized. Yung calendar of activities lang ang medyo na finalize na namin,” she explained.

She said the regional office of the Comelec in Davao is not yet accepting new registrants since they are currently clearing out their system to ensure an orderly registration.

“As of now, update lang muna kami sa mga registrants,” she said.

Caballero also informed that voters may change their residency starting August 1 to September 30.

The Comelec 11 official, meanwhile, expects more voters to register for the barangay and SK polls considering the fact that as young as 15 years old may register and vote.
