House Speaker Feliciano ‘Sonny’ Belmonte and PAGASA administrator Nathaniel T. Servando recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement thatwill effect faster transmission of weather bulletins, and advisories to the 285 legislative representatives and their constituents.
Both parties recognize that one major component of disaster mitigation from natural hazards is fast and effective dissemination and communication of weather information, warnings and advisories.
The agreement emphasized that the members of the House ofRepresentatives (HOR)S, who have direct access to the community leaders and constituents of their respective districts, can be instrumental in the fast transmission of any risk and disaster-related information.
The signed agreement stipulated that PAGASA shall regularly provide HOR, through the office of the Secretary General, bulletins, warnings and advisories related to occurrences of typhoons, floods and other weather and climate-related information which could impact on thewelfare and safety of the public. On the other hand, the HOR thru the Office of the Secretary General will release information provided by PAGASA to all members of the House of Representatives, who in turn, in close coordination with their local government units can directly transmit to their districts.
AGHAM Party-List Rep. Angelo B. Palmones, chairman of the Philippine Typhoon Committee Foundation Inc. is tie-up initiator. Palmones said the simple agreement is a ‘win-win’ not only to both parties, but especially to the public they serve. Palmones added it will also be better if all stakeholders give feedback on the disseminationstrategy for purposes of improving further the delivery of weather services being rendered by PAGASA. [PNA]
