The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is set to spearhead the inauguration on Tuesday of the Philippines’ first bike-sharing system.
Such system aims to help address traffic congestion, air pollution and other concerns by making bicycles available to people for their respective short-distance travel.
”We’re looking forward to the inauguration,” said Pam Nacpil, ADB senior transport consultant.
She noted details about the system will be known during the inauguration.
About 20 bicycles may be initially fielded for the system, she said.
The inauguration will be among the highlights of the ADB-hosted sustainable transport forum in Metro Manila this week.
Paris, Montreal, Washington, D.C., London, Mexico City, Seville, Copenhagen, Melbourne, Tel Aviv and China’s Hangzhou are among the cities the Lonely Planet travel website listed as having their respective bike-sharing systems.
Such systems are gaining popularity worldwide for being either free or affordable, environment-friendly, space- and fuel-saving and able to help people move around on their own while keeping fit.
