Jimmy Gestuveo Dureza played basketball in his younger years but as the years go by, he shifted to other disciplines like shooting
and eventually golf.
“It is where you normally go, from a physical game to a relaxed but more of a thinking game,” said Dureza, a three-time Davao City councilor and former president of the Davao City Golf Club Inc.
Golf, he said, is no longer an exclusive game for the rich because the sport has transformed and opened to middle class individuals. Dureza cited that the Davao City Golf Club is a golf club for everyone, an example of his point to those who would like to learn and enjoy the sport at a lower cost.
“The other clubs charge higher because of a higher cost of maintaining their facilities,” said Dureza.
But golf, he added, has also become a venue for him and other friends to talk about helping other members of the community.
And so, the Afternoon Golfers Association of Davao (AGAD) was formed. “We usually play in the afternoon. After working in the morning, we
get the needed break in the afternoon by playing golf,” said Dureza, who is now a consultant.
AGAD, he said, has embarked recently on a civic action to help poor and deserving communities by extending assistance.
“Naa man gyud manga lugar na angay tabangan that we know of, so we go there,” said Dureza adding that many of their members are businessmen who also would want to be of service to the community.
“Dili man tanan butang, enjoy, enjoy ka lang ug dula golf but when we gather, we thought also of doing something productive for the
community,” he said.
Dureza is not new to public service being a long-time technical aid of Davao City mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte before being elected Councilor in
the second district.
“Golfers are sportsmen and AGAD members are both leaders and public servants,” said Dureza.[MPB]
