Philspada Davao City chapter sports coordinator Armando Amancio was in a good mood in telling Edge Davao -The Business Paper, that Ernie Cawilan recently harvested medals for the national team in the 5th Southeast Asian Para Games in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia.
The 18-year-old Cawilan won his first two gold medals in the 100-meter, 400-meter freestyle swimming events and then bagged his third gold medal in record-breaking fashion in the 200-meter freestyle with a new record of two minutes and 36.02 seconds on August 19 at the Stadium Putra aquatic center .
The Davao City differently-abled athlete was born with no legs and with just one arm, but this did not stop him from becoming the delegation’s most bemedalled Filipino swimmer.
“Malipayon kaayo mi sa iyang achievements,” said Amancio. Cawilan, who arrived in Manila on August 20, is being trained for the Asian Youth Para Games next month in Tokyo.
The Filipinos, whose trip was sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission, amassed 24 gold, 24 silver and 27 bronze medals to better
the 17 gold, 21 silver and 22 bronze medal output two years ago.
They finished fifth behind the Thailand athletes who retained overall title with 148-67-46 gold-silver-bronze output, followed by host
Malaysia (82-74-56) and Vietnam (66-50-40). Singapore finished with 13-5-3, Brunei Darussalam had 9-5-8, Myanmar with 8-12-4, Cambodia
