CLEAN SLATE: Good mixture of sports, literary and musical competitions

DR. Jose Alther Rivera of USEP and Dr. Irvin C. Generalao of SPAMAST are currently leading the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges-XI (PASUC-XI) in organizing socio-cultural and sports events in Davao.

Why the mixture?

The good doctors and their team find it to be more effective in gathering not only athletes and cultural events performers but the mixture of the events is a best way to develop students in the tertiary level as a whole.

You see, there are those who can find their way excelling in ball games and some discover that they can be good in literary or musical events.

PASUC-XI has done a good job on this and in fact, years back, the leaders have sent competitors to the National State Colleges and University Athletic Association Championships.

I remember when DepEd (Department of Education) was still known as the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (MECS), socio-cultural events and sports competitions go hand in hand. I don’t mind the dancing, the ukelele playing and other stuff because I enjoy it. It was a good variety, not just getting involved in ball games with my classmates.

Those were the times when we are still in elementary and high school.

PASUC-XI has made it, in a way, revive that old program years and years ago and have it done in the university or college level. And that is awesome. College and university students can enjoy tertiary school life making them better persons for sure. You see my friends, in life, there always should be a variety.

Doctors Rivera and Generalao strongly believe that organizing various events will “provide opportunities for officials to conceptualize, develop, organize and implement programs of sports which will complement the other components of the curriculum aimed at developing higher levels of skill, understanding, appreciation and knowledge, positive attitudes and values designed to develop the full potential of the students”.

And I also strongly believe that it should always be that way.

I know that the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has a sports talent identification program and getting their eyes glued on PASUC’s programs will give them a chance to discover new sports talents. And hopefully, get rid of recycled national athletes.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) executives can also look closely into PASUC’s program. You’ll never know, they will find something to improve on and support the program. You see, we are a nation of outstanding artists.

Keep up the good work Doctors Rivera and Generalao and may those in the higher ups notice your noble program in Davao.
