CLEAN SLATE: PSC Sports for Peace/Coastal Children’s Games

Clean Slate: Moses P Billacura

I find this project very laudable and brilliant.

“Think Tanks” of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) have drawn up plans for the Sports for Peace/Coastal Children’s Games which will be implemented soon.

Really I’m impressed because we normally thought of sports and tourism as a good combination in the development of a city or town. You organize tournaments in the city and this will boost tourism in that city or town because participants arrive, book at local hotels, dine at local restaurants, shop at local malls, etc.

And when they go home, they would normally spread the good news,  “Balo mo, nindot gyud di ay ang Davao City”.

That reminds me of Sonny Nebres, marketing guy of Adidas Philippines, who years ago was hesitant to come to Davao because it is in Mindanao.  Huh?  So? Unsa di ay mis Davao? War zone?

So, when he decided to come to Davao to check the area, he himself with the approval of the bosses in Manila finally brought the Adidas Streetball at the Gaisano Mall in Bajada.  After that, each year the Adidas Streetball is organized in Davao City.  Not only that, the Nike 3-on-3 also came in.

Back to the Coastal Children’s Games, I love the idea that the children will be taught to plant mangrove trees and be part of a long-term plan to nurture the trees.   After the planting activities, they will have fun by playing games organized by the PSC.

PSC Mindanao Cluster Head Ed R. Fernandez and his team have been preparing for its implementation in the coastal areas of Hagonoy, Padada and Sulop.

This upcoming activity is organized in coordination with the Philippine Sports Institute, SMSP Batch 80 Advocacy for Environmental and Cultural Preservation Inc.

Sports development and protecting the environment, a good combination? Yet it is!

And I hope this will be done in all coastal areas of Mindanao!
