Several groups of Students and Professional artists took part in the first Mugna Kadayawan: a doodle art competition held at Magsaysay Park on Friday.
The competition’s Artistic Director Rogelito Cayas Jr. Said that this competition opened it’s doors to all Davao Artists from different walks of life to tell their stories through art.
He saw that the current trend in the Art Industry mostly falls on visual arts, particularly doodle, this is why he saw so much potential in pushing through with the event.
One of the groups competing in the event’s Professional Category, represents the Philippine National Police.
Police Officer Nhaeff Ain Tarapan said that despite this being a part of their Police Community Relations , he shared that he sees the need to break the norm of having a gap between the police force and the citizens.
“We want to show the people that policemen are versatile through all challenges.” Tarapan added.
On the other hand, Reymond Dave Pesidas and his group, competing in the student category, said that their goal is for the street art style to be made known to a wider audience, to also clear up misconceptions on their craft.
“Pag nadunggan nila ang street-art, maisip nila, hugaw,” Pesidas said. “They see street art as an eye-sore.”
He added that through this competition, he hopes that the people of the city would find the beauty in street art.
All entries from the 8-hour competition will be judged by Davao City’s finest Visual Arts Practioners and Professionals including: Dadai Joacquin, Abraham Garcia Jr. And Samuel Ang.
Winners will be announced on August 19, 10am at the said venue of the competition.
Cayas said that after the event, the City Government plans to display all doodle art entries inside Magsaysay Park.
