Davao City recognizes crucial role of coops

More than 1,000 members from 93 cooperatives in the city attended the culminating program of the Cooperative Month Celebration, led by the Davao City Cooperative Development Office, at the Mergrande Resort on October 28.

During the month-long celebration, themed “Cooperatives: Empowering the Poor and Vulnerable Towards Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development,” which started late September, a series of key activities were held in the city.

These included a medical and dental mission held at Sibulan in Toril District, which benefitted thousands of residents. Some 650 children also received toys during the event.

The CCDO also initiated a Trade Fair and Exhibit held at the City Council Ground Floor, and a Community Tree Planting program in Buda in Marilog District.

A total of 74 coop members also underwent specialized trainings on Organic Chicken Production, Risk Management and Financial Management.

Three coops had been given the hall of fame award under the Cooperative-LGU Active Partnership (CLAP) Awards for being consistent top cooperatives, four coops named Most Outstanding Cooperatives, while three others were cited for being Outstanding Cooperatives.

The Cooperative Month is celebrated every October pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 493, series of 2003. The proclamation also recognized the “crucial role of coops in savings mobilization, in providing accessible and affordable credit, and in maximizing the resources and energies of the less economically-fortunate individuals towards economic development, political empowerment and sociocultural reform.” (CIO)
