Amid the growing anticipation following the declaration of Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio that she is open to running as president in the 2022 national elections, President Rodrigo Duterte reiterated his disapproval to his daughter joining the presidential race in 2022.

“Open lang. That is all there is to it. As usual, may I give a little bit of a personal comment dito sa programang ito. My stand is I am against really the candidacy of my daughter. I want her spared from the itong the vagaries of politics dito sa Pilipinas, lalo na itong mga personalities around in the likes of Trillanes, si De Lima, o walang ginawa kung hindi mag-atake ng kapwa tao nila,” the President said during his Talk to the People on Covid-19 on July 12, 2021.

The President said he would rather have either former Senator Antonio Trillanes or Senator Leila de Lima go for the country’s highest office as it would pain him to see his daughter being unreasonably insulted by them.

“So I would rather that ibigay ang gobyerno sa kanila. Let them win if they… I wish them luck and even wish them win kung manalo sila para kanila na itong gobyerno at gawain nila ang gusto nilang gawin. Ako, I am. Masasaktan ako ‘pag… Siyempre anak ko. Itong bastos itong bunganga ni Trillanes. Ewan ko kung saan niya nakuha ‘yang katangian na ‘yan. Pati itong si De Lima. She is wallowing in pity and as a consequence of that, she has become virulent almost, virulent talaga ang lumalabas sa bunganga,” the President said.

He said Mayor Sara could still run some other time.

“Ako, gusto ko itabi ko na lang muna ang anak ko. Maybe some other time, not at this time when the Philippine politics is crowded with people in the likes of Trillanes tapos ‘yung si De Lima. Gusto ko sila na lang muna. Run at some other time, huwag ngayon kasi wala kang maano dito, mabastos ka lang. It’s not good for a -a woman to be, you know, being — brazen niyong masyadong mga salita at masaktan lang. So as a father, I would not want that to happen to my daughter,” he said.

Mayor Sara has declared her openness to running as President in the 2022 elections in Cebu City last week, but clarified that she will be conducting consultations to get the thoughts of the people of her running as President.

Mayor Sara said it is important for her to know the thoughts of the people particularly those who do not know her.
