The Department of Agriculture in Davao Region (DA-11) called on the public to support the country’s rice industry as it marks National Rice Awareness Month this November.
Through its “Be RICEponsible” campaign, DA-11 is promoting mindful rice consumption and backing local farmers, DA-11 Director Macario Gonzaga said in an interview Monday.
“For every grain saved, we support another Filipino,” Gonzaga said. “I encourage everyone to join our campaign and take responsibility for preserving this essential crop.”
The month-long observance, started by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s 2004 Presidential Proclamation 524, highlights the importance of rice as a staple food and a key agricultural product.
The campaign encourages all sectors — from consumers to policymakers — to play a role in rice conservation.
To bolster local rice production, DA-11 is providing resources to farmers, including Rice Farmers Financial Assistance and discount vouchers for seeds and fertilizers.
Gonzaga emphasized the importance of such initiatives, noting that they help ensure food security and sustainability.
“We’re committed to helping farmers improve their yield and efficiency through mechanization and other support programs,” Gonzaga said. (PNA)
