The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 11 (Davao Region) on Tuesday reminded consumers to exercise caution when engaging in sales promotions offered by business establishments, particularly during the holiday season.
DTI-11 Director Romeo Castañaga advised the public to be wary of online sales promotions, noting that some fraudulent ads use legitimate-looking social media pages.
“When you check them, they appear to have just been created and have few followers. Consumers need to be vigilant and ensure that the promotional activities they are joining are legitimate and compliant with fair trade laws,” Castañaga said in a statement.
He encouraged consumers to contact the nearest DTI office or reach out through the agency’s official social media channels to verify promotions or report suspected scams.
“While sales promos are exciting opportunities to save, we urge consumers to be vigilant. A little caution can go a long way in avoiding scams and ensuring a safe shopping experience,” he added.
Castañaga also highlighted key indicators of legitimate promotions, such as a DTI permit number, clearly specified promo duration, and a DTI representative overseeing raffle draws.
For promotional discounts, he advised consumers to look for the original or regular price tags. Prizes or freebies under the List of Mandatory Certification scheme should display Product Standard or Import Commodity Clearance markings, as well as other required details.
The DTI urged consumers to remain vigilant and report irregularities to protect their rights and ensure fair trade practices during the holiday rush. (PNA)
