SPECKS OF LIFE: Who’s afraid of Mocha Uson?

There was an old film “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” starred in by the late Hollywood star Elizabeth Taylor. It’s so old that I only remember its title and the star. Might have been filmed in the 70s, I reckon.

Anyway, the brouhaha generated by the appointment of Ms. Mocha as the new Communications Asst. Secretary by PRRD seemed to have disturbed a hornet’s nest.

The quizzical articles by the mainstream media, insinuating a presidential error, have earned front page space, notably by the PDI whose corporate owners have been pinpointed to as delinquent taxpayers.

I used to watch Mocha and her all-girlie Mocha Girls band – for the info of my Davao readers – perform at the Metro Walk area in Ortigas, Pasig City. I would say they are good (and sexy, too). Oh, oh, I don’t like that salivating look in your eyes, amigo.

The Mocha Uson then and the Mocha of today is a startling revelation. Until the 2016 political hustings, your deadline beater did not know that this lady band leader cum starlet suffered in misery when her father-judge was gunned down several years ago. Until today, the crime has not been solved.

Read how the PDI described her appointment: “Unson’s appointment – with a salary grade level of between SG 27 and 29 and a base pay of between P87,000 and P106,000 – was met with disgust, outrage and mockery from several sectors, with the alternative account of the Armed Forces of the Philippines tweeting the strongest and most critical reaction (May 11, 2017 Tuesday).”

Anyone who knows how to read between the lines will shiver in the spin with which this article wanted to portray Ms. Uson as if she did not deserve it.

It is unfair, right. The article is judging the book by its cover, to cite a cliché.

Why? Because there are more stupid people I know who were employed by previous Malacanang tenants than Ms. Mocha. I am stating this with authority because I once worked at the Palace.  There are more USecs and ASecs who were appointed because they were just connected properly. Get the drift?

Surely, Ms. Mocha will be fit as a fiddle in her new job. She will definitely come out smoking (like Smokin’ Joe Frazier) to defend PRRD against those who pillory her president. Mocha is feisty like the late Sen. Miriam but she is also sensible and intelligent.

In a politically-stirred atmosphere such as we have now, Mocha Uson’s appointment at the PCOO is a very much welcome development. Sec. Martin Andanar, who is too decent to tangle with anti-Duterte media critics, can now heave a sigh of relief. Because he is not the war freaky type who would engage in an useless argument, Mocha can be his swashbuckling lieutenant.

Ergo, Mocha is the right persona to shield PRRD from the diatribes of the yellow media army. She will not back away nor back down and will take on all-comers.

Because of her huge following in the social media, anti-Duterte trolls and hackers are now careful about making anti-Mocha pronouncements. In fact, I have observed that politicians, specially LP stalwarts, avoid making any critical or suggestive comments against the feisty Ms. Uson.

Truth is that Mocha does not have anything to lose. What you see is what you get. She is not pretending to be somebody or something that she is not. She is frank and speaks with candor and intelligence.

So, who’s afraid of Mocha Uson?

With her new job, title and assignment, expect Mocha to be in the media limelight, un-holstering her six-shooters and aiming them at anti-Duterte detractors. Bang, bang!

I think she will be effective in the media frontlines. (Email your feedback to fredlumba@yahoo.com.) GOD BLESS THE PHILIPPINES!
