SM’s environment project grows stronger

The nationwide environment campaign of SM Malls is going strong in Davao City. This was bared last Wednesday in a press forum by Marlowe Singson, SM City Davao manager for advertisements and promotions.
Singson said the “My Own Bag” (MOB) campaign of SM Malls nationwide is a commitment to environment protection and preservation by promoting the use of green bags, which are biodegradable plastic shopping bags.
She said the green bag is a hardwearing non-woven fabric bag, made of 100-percent polypropylene, and may last up to two years of weekly use. Polypropylene is recyclable, non-toxic, allergy free and non-reactive to human skin. The bright apple green bag is reusable, multi-purpose and foldable. It measures 13” x 5” x 16” with a10-inch handle.
Singson said the use of plastic shopping bags was reduced to 40 percent since MOB was launched in Davao City last August 19. The campaign was first launched in SM Makati in May this year.
“We are getting a good response to the campaign in the Davao SM branch,” she said, adding that on the average, SM City Davao has saved half a million pieces of plastic bags from nine stores since the launching of the MOB campaign.
The MOB campaign has generated P1.3 million earnings from the SM green bags being sold at P35 per piece.
For his part, SM City Davao Supermarket manager Melbert Villegas said the MOB project is aimed at saving the world, saving the environment by reducing the use of plastic shopping bags.
Meanwhile, Singson said all Makro Stores in the country are now owned by SM. There are about 15 Makro stores nationwide.
SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) is currently working to repackage Makro stores to make them friendlier to the consumers, SM City.
Singson said the wholesale buying concept of Makro stores is seemingly unacceptable to most of the consumers resulting to some negative feedbacks. SMIC is currently working on how to bring Makro stores closer to the people.
“We’re trying to correct Makro through touching base with the consumers,” Singson said.
She cited SM’s Save More Stores or smaller supermarkets as an effective concept that will cover a wide range of consumers because it serves the day-to-day needs of the consumers. SMIC has about 18 Save More Stores nationwide.
In a recent disclosure to the Philippine Stocks Exchange (PSE), SM said its venture to “smaller” supermarkets such as the Save More stores boosted SM etail’s earnings.
An SM official earlier said SMIC is planning to convert its Makro stores into hypermarkets — outlets combining a supermarket and a department store, because the concept of wholesale buying no longer appeals to consumers
SMIC is eyeing to initially implement its plan on three Makro stores in Novaliches, Makati and Mandaluyong. PNA
