DAVAO CITY – Philippine Veterans Bank recently its newly renovated Branch last Friday, May 5, 2017 in time for the 72nd anniversary of the Liberation of Davao on May 3, 2017. The Bank’s invited special guests Atty. Sonia S. De Los Reyes – BSP Regional Director and Veterans Federation of the Philippines (VFP) Davao Post President Florentino Babila and VFP Region X Post President Teofilo Gamutan. On the side of the Bank, PVB Chairman & CEO Roberto F. De Ocampo, OBE and President and COO Nonilo C. Cruz will lead the inauguration rites.
The centerpiece of the renovated branch is its World War II History Wall – 4 panels that tell the story of World War II in the Philippines with several of the panels dedicated to local WWII events that have happened in Davao. The branch also has two (2) display cases that contain artifacts, paraphernalia, and memorabilia from the war which combined with the history wall, make a visit to PVB Davao almost like a trip to the museum. The history wall also has a panel with a display monitor that continuously screens WW2 documentaries and photos.
Davao City has a significant history during World War II mainly because of the heavy Japanese presence in its pre-war civilian populace. During the Liberation period, close to 4,500 Japanese of the 100th Division were killed in the outskirts of the City by the Allied Forces 24th Division. The Battle lasted from April to mid-June 1945 and paved the way for the complete liberation of Mindanao.
PVB Davao, located along PVB Building CM Recto Street, Davao City, also sports a new façade with a large “V” that is not only a nod to the bank’s stockholders – the over 300,000 Filipino World War II veterans – but also a symbol of the aggressive outlook that the bank has of the city. This aggressiveness is easily dispelled once inside the branch as the interiors convey a sense of comfort and homeliness.
