EDITORIAL: Big achieving small team

When one commits to serve the community first and foremost with its dedication and passion, the recognition for the effort is beyond financial rewards.

Edge Davao, as a news organization, is very unconventional. It is a very small team which functions under a mindset of multiple roles. In short, it is lean but mean. Through the years, it has survived the very competitive media market in Davao by simply not being competitive with the field but being competitive with its own organization.

So when you have the country’s most prestigious community journalism awards recognizing its efforts, it is more than just a recognition but a validation that in this industry, you need not be big in numbers. You just have to be big when it comes to hardwork.

PPI recognized Edge Davao for its Environment and Economic Reporting. Winning two of the five awards at stake for the daily category capped another year of milestones for the newspaper.

The citations read:

Best in Environmental Reporting: EDGE DAVAO (Mindanao-Daily) – Edge Davao had lots of excellent feature stories on the environment and even produced a number of series on the environment. They even have a supplement on Earth Day, something even the national dailies did not even bother to do. With its consistent environmental coverage, it has brought green issues of global concern to the consciousness of the local people making them more aware that such issues are interconnected and something that everyone should be of concern and take action even in their own small ways.

Best in Business and Economic Reporting: EDGE DAVAO (Mindanao-Daily) – EDGE DAVAO has been chosen winner in the daily category for its in depth and comprehensive coverage of business issues and events and corporate and individual players in its coverage area.

To PPI, thank you for seeing the value of our work. We will continue to be inspired by this recognition.
