EDITORIAL: Win-win

For good measure, the idea of President Rodrigo Duterte to have term sharing in place in the House of Representatives appears to be the better solution to the standoff for the hotly-contested Speakership.

On Tuesday, President Duterte said he would prefer a term sharing that will have Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano have the first go of the Speakership followed next by Marinduque Rep. Lord Alan Velasco. The third aspirant Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez will be Majority Floor Leader.

This is by far the acceptable solution amongst all the other proposals including the endorsement of Rep. Isidro Ungab.

Nevertheless, President Duterte’s idea comes in the form of a simple suggestion. The House of Representatives is another branch of government that is co-equal with the executive branch.

Ultimately, the choice of the Speakership is an issue that will be decided by the members of the legislative chamber, not by the President or the party coalition belonging under the administration.
