EDITORIAL: No reason for complacency

Davao City’s number of new COVID-19 cases daily is down to 100.

Some 30 of Davao City’s 182 barangays have been lauded for logging high percentages of fully vaccinated residents.

The above developments augur well for Davao City’s battle against the pandemic.

However, these do not presage a better future wherein it would be okay for citizens to drop their guards against infection by the coronavirus.

For contrary developments have also occurred, like the fact that the Philippines has already detected two cases of infection by the Omicron variant.
In fact, Philippine authorities have now included eight more in the “red list” of countries wherein travel to the Philippines and vice-versa is restricted due to Omicron variant. The eight are Andorra, France, Monaco, Northern Marianas Islands, Reunion, San Marino, South Africa and Switzerland. They joined Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, The Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini and Mozambique.

Let’s learn the hard lesson of these countries which were hit by a recurrence of COVID-19 cases after their citizens became complacent, thinking their countries were already out of the woods.
