URBANISSIMO: A taste of Indonesia

The Marco Polo Davao’s Cafe Marco took a turn towards the Spice Islands last weekend as The Consulate of Indonesia in Davao held its Indonesian food festival from March 17 to 19 and was launched by no less than the ambassador of Indonesia to the Philippines, Johny Josephus Lumintang.

The Indonesian Food Festival featured various Indonesian signature dishes such as Gado-gado, Sop Buntut, Lamb and Chicken Satay, and by favourite Beef Rendang which was savoury with a kick of spice thanks to the hot Indonesian chillies and sauces brought in specially for the occasion.

I was truly amazed at the variety and depth of flavour every dish wonderfully imparted onto my tastebuds. The use of spices such as cloves, cinnamon, lemon grass, ginger, galangal, nutmeg, and chilli, as well as balancing ingredients such as palm sugar, and shrimp paste was evident. Every dish in the spread was authentic thanks to the guest Indonesian chefs who were specially flown in by the consulate.

“Indonesia is the world’s biggest archipelago and there are hundreds of different dishes to taste,” said Indonesian Consulate General Berlian Napitupulu, “but one thing is certain is that Indonesian food is always full of flavour and never bland.”

The Indonesian Food Festival also coincided with the 1st Indonesian Food and Beverage Expo held at the House of Indonesia at Juna Subdivision where various Indonesian food products went on exhibit.

Congratulations to the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Davao on a weekend culinary getaway to the Spice Islands of Indonesia.
