URBANISSIMO: Finding ‘awesome’ in Davao

Growing up in the 80’s, I remember bugging my parents to buy for me the latest toys being advertised on TV. One toy that stuck with me from the first set that was given to me all the way through to adulthood was Lego.

Yes, I grew up with the little building bricks that were the brainchild of carpenter Ole Kirk Kristiansen. With just a few bricks and a head of creativity, I was able to made entire worlds complete with their own stories. Back then, Lego sets were difficult to find and collect but fast forward to April 22, 2017 and Lego finally opens its 7th Certified Store in the Philippines at the Abreeza Mall.

What makes the Lego Certified Store unique is that it offers a space that nurtures creativity. From the interactive play area, to the fully assembled Lego sets, as well as a Pick-a-Brick wall where anyone can customise and hand-pick the different bricks they need to create their own masterpiece.

Collectors can rejoice as the Lego store also carries various exclusive Lego sets such as the much sought after Big Bang Theory set, the Death Star set from Star Wars, and even the Simpsons’ House set.

The store is the fifth in a series of stores in the country that will open under Lego’s “Better With Every Brick” campaign. Lego together with UNICEF Philippines will work together to help build the first National Centre for Children with Disabilities in Philippine General Hospital. To support the program, a portion of the sales of Lego Certified Stores in the country will be donated for the Centre’s construction.

For the Davao store opening Lego issued a cheque worth Php500,000 as part of the fundraising drive to raise a total of Php10 Million for the construction of the centre.

“The Lego brand goes beyond being one of the top global toymakers, we are a beloved builder of childhood fantasies. We aim to inspire and engage the world’s builder by injecting fun into play,” said LAJ Philippines Retail Manager Sharlene Ortiga, “This partnership with UNICEF Philippines resonates well with this dream to extend the opportunity to help more children by bringing the National Centre for Children with Disabilities to reality.”

Durianburg has truly become more awesome thanks to Lego.
