Love comes in many forms and four Dabawenyo artists are celebrating the love month of February with their own interpretations of love in all its faces and phases. Titled “Love Sonnets” the exhibit features 80 artworks in watercolour, oil and acrylic created by Robin Castillo, Mean Tan Guinoo, Miyen Lim and Nina Custodio.
With a love and dedication to painting, Robin Castillo breathes life into everyday scenes. This self taught artist combines technique and his penchant for Davao urban landscape, conveying the poignancy of daily living seen through his eyes during his walks around the city. He isolates and immortalises human interactions on the street with his oil paintings, carefully depicting the subtleties of family relations with his characteristic soft brushstrokes and a limited palette of four colours.
Mean Tan Guinoo wields her painting brush to express the importance of Divine love through her flower series. Her bold, textured strokes convey both softness and strength. Artfully depicting flowers not only gently swaying with the soft wind but also standing up to a strong breeze, much like someone with a strong faith in God’s unwavering love and wisdom.
With her raw and expressive strokes, Nina Custodio sees painting as an opportunity for self expression and considers it as an extension of herself and of her feelings. Her works often feature bright and vivid colours with some pieces that are dark and brooding. Her paintings show love’s different forms and feel, playing with light and shade and varying her palette to convey a compendia of moods.
“I see love in all things. In every thing there is love. In sadness and when you’re happy; in sunshine and in moonbeams. Love is in every season, every tree, every flower. It is in darkness and in light; in your heart and on your sleeve. Love is what it is . Let it.” Nina Custodio
Trusting her heart and imagination, Miyen’s playful dance of colours tells of her journey in life and in painting, expressing her love and romance with fluid, gestural strokes, creating artworks that are soothing and magical. hey works exuding tenderness and mystique, making one believe that love can both be dreamy as much as it is real.
Love Sonnets opens this February 8 and runs until the 29th at the Morning Light and Gallery Shop located along Quirino Ave., Davao City
